Who We Are At The Joshua Center

The Joshua Center exists in the effort to engage and equip people, individually and corporately toward increased understanding, connection, wholeness and purpose.

Toward this effort, TJC provides an array of services, including outpatient counseling, community educational opportunities and corporate support.  TJC’s outpatient services are available to individuals, couples and families who would like support.  Our highly trained, clinical staff is available to serve for a myriad of presenting issues and/or challenges.  Such challenges often include; struggles with depression and/or anxiety, marital or couple difficulties, sexual issues, parenting, childhood challenges, grief, trauma, transitions, etc.  The Joshua Center is a faith based, Christian organization staffed by highly trained professionals. Our professional staff works hard to follow all appropriate ethical codes and never, under any circumstance, will enforce any religious beliefs on a client.  Many of our clients are non-religious or are distrusting of faith-based intervention.  Staff at TJC seek to be “bilingual,” in that each is prepared to engage faith/spiritual matters when the clients chooses, and at other times not, using secular/research based approaches without faith inclusion. It is our privilege and intention to work with people “where they are” in a honoring and respectful way. We are an organization that upholds honoring and loving others as a core value regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, political preference and/or ability.  The Joshua Center is not a political organization and will not take political stances or endorse candidates or political parties, but will focus instead on client care in hopes of providing a safe place of connection for a diverse population.

Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed initially by Dr. Sue Johnson, is based on a theory of adult attachment and bonding that has been proven effective through much research. Studies show that having safe bonds and healthy attachments can help you navigate life with less anxiety and chaos. EFT believes that emotions themselves have an innately adaptive potential that, if activated, can help clients change problematic emotional states or unwanted self-experiences. Emotions are connected to our most essential needs- to be connected to others and the ability o bond with others is essential to resiliency.  The Joshua Center has a collaborative relationship with the Arkansas EFT center, www.arkansaseft.com, many of our staff also work in EFT leadership circles.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is an effective approach regardless of age, gender or presenting problem. It works best when a parent, family member or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process. Play therapy is a primary intervention or supportive therapy for behavioral issues caused by bullying, grief, loss, divorce, abandonment, physical and sexual abuse, crisis and trauma.

Premarital (or pre-commitment therapy)

The Joshua Center joins soon to be arriving couples in identifying and addressing potential challenges and helping them build on relational strengths. We meet 6-15 times and prefer to begin roughly 6 months before the wedding. We believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and are honored to join this sacred process in people’s lives and therefore address topics like family of origin, sex, money, expectations, roles, cycles and other areas that reveal insight to having better unity.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a type of trauma therapy that is practiced by a few of our professional therapists that integrates both sides of the brain (through tapping, eye movements, or sounds) to heal events that were previously distressing. The intent is to heal the brain, not just to provide coping skills for people. EMDR is listed in the new Department of Veterans Affairs & Department of Defense Practice Guidelines "A" category as "highly recommended" for the treatment of trauma. Treatment is used to focus on past memories that are contributing to present situations that are disturbing, and what skills the client may need for the future.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a brain-based psychotherapy model that targets the subcortical brain through the client's visual field. By processing emotional/physical pain and traumatic events it increases client resources and assists in building creativity and confidence.

Intensive Sessions

Several of our TJC therapists meet in intensive blocks of time (typically on Friday and/or Saturdays) for focused counseling work. These blocks vary from 4 hours to as many as 16 hours. While this can cover multiple areas, intensives typically deal with marital distress, infidelity recovery and/or the desire to address core/trauma issues in an extended time format.

Discernment/Faith Sessions

The Joshua Center partners with local ministers from churches and offers a unique form of care for those who are interested in an intensive faith experience. Our team of ministers works personally with clients to help them discern the spiritual dynamics in their lives (according to the values of those helped), to strategically address spiritual issues through various forms of prayer and to find and freedom through spiritual interventions. Over the last decade, our prayer team has established a reputation of excellence in helping people find healing and wholeness in their lives. Each member of our prayer team comes with years of training and experience in ministry and is deeply invested in the well-being of the people with whom they work.
